1 Snacking......? on Sun Mar 22, 2009 8:45 pm

Ok, anyone that's attended the old Saturday support group knows me and my problem with snacking, primarily granola bars.

Anyone else have issues with snacking? How do you curb urges? How do you get back to not snacking at all?

It's easy to say "oh just stop doing it" but there's so much more involved than that. I know I shouldn't snack. I know it's not helping me and it's actually hurting me, yet I still sit here and snack.

My meals are close to correct, by the way. In case anyone is wondering.... Portions are good, protein is first, 2-3 bites protein, 1 bite veg, 2-3 bites protein, 1 bite fruit, etc. And actually, I tend to not eat the fruit part because of the sugars (ironic eh?)

The best I've come up with so far is don't stop doing stuff. Boredom eating is the worst time for me. I also eat more with stress, etc too.

What's your method of dealing with this?

Hi Casey,
Have you read, "food addiction the body knows" written by Kay Sheppard
She claims some of us are addicted to wheat, flour products and
sugars and fats. If we eliminate these foods our physical cravings
subside.I have a copy of the book.I can bring it to the next mtg
There is much more to her theory,it is worth reading. We are all a
life road searching for what is true for us.

I'll go look for it.
I've got several books around the house that I need to read, just hadn't found the time yet.

Thank you two for replying!
I was beginning to think no one wanted to use this method of communication.

Any other ideas?

Hey Casey....You are not alone....I have had the problems with snacking...mine tend to be at night...you know watching tv and such...I thought I was doing good if I did snack..I would have protein...after Dr Nichols making me cry at my 6th months check up I have stopped that....I still think about it, but I have tried to keep myself busy...But it's still there. I am not sure what else to say, we all have the problem but I don't think many of us will admit it..especially if Joanne is around...LOL
I have a picture of myself at my heaviest and when I feel like snacking I look at that and ask myself if I want to be back there...The craving is still there, but I have had to make the conscience (sp) decision not to put the food in my mouth..I don't always win...there are more times then not that I will eat. But we have all worked so hard to do the surgery, let's not blow it...You did it before (no snacking) and you can do it again...And remember not beat yourself up about it...It will just make you feel worse and eat more... Very Happy

I guess I'll just carry on this conversation and put this comment here, even though it may not be "ethically" correct ('cause ya know... some people get bent out of shape about posting 'off-topic')... but anyway....

Now I forgot what I was going to type about...

Oh yeah... I'm scared of the scale. I've not stepped on a scale for too long now. I want to calibrate my scale and move it, then start using it. I need to. I know I've gained. I can feel it. The more I think about it, the more depressed I get. So I don't think about it. This is where the snowball effect starts. I really wish Joanne and some others would join on here and give some input. I need to email her. Perhaps we should all email her and "convince" her to provide her wonderful insight/feedback here
lol!

Hi Casey
This is the food addict, Susie. I hear your fear about the scale and weight
gain. I have recently been getting willing to start commiting
my daily food plan to one other person or this group, this just means that I
write down in the morning or the evening before all three of
my meals and snack.
Example:
breakfast: 1 serving fruit, 1 cup hot cereal, 1/2 cup soy yorgart
lunch: large raw vegi salad w/ 2 T oil and vin dressing
3 oz baked tofu 1/2 whole grain bagel with 1 T tofutti
cream cheese
dinner: 1 cup brown rice, stir fryed mixed vegis with 3oz soy
tempeh. 1 T oil
snack: 1 whole grain waffle toasted. 1/2 cup cherry soy yorgurt

When I do this I feel more supported in staying on track.
I think we should weight ourselves once a week but what really is most inportant is keeping our food planned and regular exercise please get that scale fixed or get a new one. With the help of each other we can maintain a healthy weight and a balanced life.
By the way, how did the eye surgery go for you? Susie Sutton

bounce I feel like this little smiley..all bouncey...I know we have the Thursday night support..no offense to those that are in it..But I really do miss our Saturday group as well...I think there were more of us that were newer surgery patients. Those that are years out have been BIG help for us newbies...But I feel like we need the newer ones too...I know a few that have had or about to have surgery and I am wondering how it is going with them...Even though I hated to drive to Susanville once a month, I miss seeing those people too...especially the ones I had surgery with...I guess I am just making no sense...guess that comes with not eating enough...My point...Even though I hated doing it when Joanne had as journal before surgery, I have made myself start being honest with myself and writing down what I am eating...even the mindless eating..which I have caught myself doing over the last week...I think writing it down keeps us accountable to what we are supposed to be doing in the program...I have also started talking to a good friend that is trying to lose weight "the old fashion way" and I am helping her keep herself accountable too and I think that is helping...
Hope everyone has a good day..and glad you are back to work Casey...and remember the scale isn't our enemy..it just helps us keep on track with our losing...just get on it, right your number down and just remember it's only a number and you did it before surgery and you can do it again...AND NO SNACKING..I know easier said then done... tongue

Hi Casey. I'm 7 months out and have found myself grazing a few times. I keep busy at night. I'm doing my scrapbooking and therefore too busy to get up and get munchies. I also pour a glass of SoBe Lean over ice into a NICE crystal glass making it seem like a very special treat. Then I sip it slowly. Or, I just go to bed. No eating in bed. Hope to see you around! 10 Hi Guys on Thu Apr 16, 2009 2:27 am

If you want to weigh in on Thursday nights the scale is out in the hall out side Joanne's office. You are all welcome to do so if you feel like it. We have told many of you to come in at anytime to weigh in with us if you need someone to be accountable to. That still goes. I know sometimes for some people that helps. I love this site. You did a good job Casey. Thursday night I will be there to see you all before 5:30 I do have a meeting at 6pm for my new job, so won't be able to stay for the meeting this month. Hope to see everyone tomorrow night.
